REHABILITATION AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS OF THE NACALA DRINKING WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM

Mozambique

Project

The city of Nacala is currently served by a combination of surface water and groundwater sources. Nacala receives drinking water from two main sources, namely:

  • Surface water: Muecula River dam;
  • Groundwater abstraction fields at Mpaco, Mutuzi 1 and 2.
    The consulting services cover design and supervision services for:
  • Rehabilitation and construction of a water intake, a water treatment plant, transmission mains and a
    pumping station;
  • Rehabilitation and construction of distribution centres and distribution networks.

Water production for the rehabilitation and construction of a water intake, water treatment, amain pipeline and pumping stations, Nacala:

  • Electromechanical equipment of the Muecula dam intake pumping station EB0 (Q = 350 m³/h; TDH =42 m);
  • A new treatment plant (WTP) with a capacity of 16,000 m³/day (first phase), later increased to 24,000 m³/day, including the pumping station EB1 (Q = 335 m³/h; TDH = 40 m) with the planned components (cascade, coagulation, flocculation, sand filters and a 2,000 m³ clear water tank);
  • A new ground-level reservoir R0 with a capacity of 2,000 m³ to replace the existing 200 m³ elevated tower;
  • A new pumping station EB2 (Q = 335 m³/h; TDH = 97 m);
  • A new WTP with a capacity of 10,000 m³/day to remove iron from the boreholes, including the pumping station EB4 (Q = 250 m³/h; TDH = 207 m) with the planned components (cascade, sand filter and a 2,000 m³ clear water tank);
  • A new DN500 ductile iron transport pipeline of 1,250 m, from the intake pumping station EB0 to the treatment plant (pressure main);
  • A new DN500 ductile iron transmission pipeline of 3,500 m, from the pumping station EB1 to the new underground reservoir R0 (pressure main);
  • A new DN500 ductile iron transport pipeline of 11,500 m, from the new underground reservoir R0 to the new booster pumping station EB2 (gravity main);
  • A new DN500 ductile iron transport pipeline of 6,200 m, from the pumping station EB2 to the new underground reservoir R8 (pressure main);
  • A new DN350 ductile iron main pipeline of 15,500 m, from the Mutuzi II treatment plant to the new elevated reservoir R8 (pressure main);

Water distribution for the rehabilitation and construction of distribution centres and a network in Nacala:

  • A new distribution centre R8 comprising a two-cell ground-level reservoir of 4,000 m³, an elevated tower reservoir of 500 m³ and a pumping station EB3 (Q = 230 m³/h; TDH = 24 m);
  • A new 250 m³ elevated tower reservoir R5;
  • A new 250 m³ elevated tower reservoir R6;
  • A new DN600 ductile iron main pipeline of 8,200 m, from the new ground-level reservoir R8 to the existing distribution centres (DC) R3/R4, and a DN400 pipeline of 400 m to the new elevated tower reservoir R5 (gravity main);
  • Replacement of the existing transport pipeline (0.5 km, DN400 AC) from DC R3/R4 to DC R1/R2 with an aerial DN400 DI pipeline;
  • Rehabilitation and extension of the distribution network (approximately 250 km);
  • Transfer of connections from the old network to the new distribution network (approximately 5,000).
