The study covers the western spur: Kairouan (Sidi Amor Kenani station) – Kasserine over 145.2 km, the link to Kairouan Nord station (12.8 km) and the Lassouda branch from Jilma (28 km). Its aim is to better connect Central Tunisia to the development hubs of Sousse and Enfidha.

It is an electrified single-track standard-gauge line (1,435 mm) with mixed passenger and freight traffic (160 km/h for passengers, 100 km/h for freight, 25 t axle load), with no level crossings, and includes numerous bridges and viaducts, 25 overpasses and 28 underpasses.
