Between October 2020 and February 2023, SCET-TUNISIE carried out the baseline studies, the detailed preliminary design, the environmental and social impact assessments, and the preparation of the tender documents for the São João Baptista Watershed Development and Enhancement Project on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde. The works monitoring and supervision mission, which began in July 2023, is currently underway. The project's overall objective is to contribute to improving the living conditions of rural populations through the sustainable mobilisation of water resources, soil protection and the reduction of the effects of erosion and torrential flooding, as well as the development of irrigated agriculture in the São João Baptista catchment area. The project is funded by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA). It mainly comprises the following components:
- Infrastructure for water resource mobilisation, flood protection and soil conservation, in particular:
- The construction of boreholes equipped with photovoltaic systems;
- The construction of storage reservoirs;
- The installation of irrigation water supply and distribution pipelines;
- The construction and rehabilitation of catchment dams, underground dams and flood control dams;
- The development of access roads through the construction of asphalt roads and interlocking paving stone paths;
- Erosion control measures;
- Capacity building for the relevant institutions and stakeholders;
- As well as support for the Project Implementation Unit (PIU).
