Project
As part of the integrated management and development of the Senegal River, OMVS launched a pre-feasibility study for structures to raise the river’s water level. The aim is to improve navigability over about 900 km between Ambidédi and Diama (target draught of 2.5 m), to secure water supply (irrigation, drinking water, livestock, industrial uses) in the face of climate change, to include hydropower generation where possible and to preserve the valley’s ecosystems.
The study examined two solutions, which can be combined depending on the section: mobile dams (water-level raising structures) creating a series of three or four navigable reaches, and targeted dredging of rocky or sandy sills.
Our mission
The study resulted in a pre-feasibility report and the terms of reference for the preliminary design, detailed design and bidding documents studies. Our services consisted of:
- collection and analysis of existing data (bathymetry, topography, hydrology, hydraulics, socio-economic data);
- 1D/2D hydraulic modelling of the river between Ambidédi and Diama (900 km);
- identification and pre-selection of sites for the raising structures, their preliminary sizing and analysis of dredging options;
- preliminary socio-economic and environmental assessment and definition of management, operation and maintenance guidelines;
- preparation of the terms of reference for the feasibility study and the bidding documents;
- organisation in France of a study visit and capacity-building session for the Client’s representatives.
