Project
The project involves the construction or rehabilitation of small-scale irrigation facilities. It also includes the development or consolidation of lowland areas, particularly in zones located downstream of irrigation systems. The “lowlands” component follows 15 years of AFD-funded projects in the rice sector in northern Ghana, the most recent of which was the Rice Sector Support Project (RSSP), which concluded in 2016. The formulation study identified a list of various irrigation facilities to be constructed. Three main types of small-scale irrigation systems were identified:
- Dam-based irrigation (rehabilitation of 9 existing dams and construction of 6 new dams);
- Irrigation by pumping water from the Black Volta River using solar-powered pumps;
- Irrigation by pumping groundwater using solar-powered wells.
