EXTENSION AND MODERNISATION OF THE INGLES PORT ON THE ISLAND OF MAIO

SUPERVISION AND CONTROL OF WORKS

Cape Verde

Project

The port of Porto Ingles is a relay point for the island of Maio and the rest of the Cape Verdean islands, and the current traffic is mainly with the port of Praia.
The current infrastructure of the port consists only of a wharf (slab on piles) and an embankment protected by a rock rider. The wharf, located about one kilometre from the town of Maio, was built in the second half of the nineties and was subsequently extended to allow the use of boats of up to 5,000 TDW.
The design of the wharf (reinforced concrete slab supported by reinforced concrete piles covered by a metal sheath) was chosen to avoid disturbing the hydro-sedimentary regime of the coastline.

The current port configuration is described as follows:

  • The jetty has a total length of approximately 342.50 m and a width of 14.50 m, with its sea end facing south-west and is located at a depth of approximately 12.0 m ;
  • The current median is rectangular in configuration with dimensions of 140 m x 50 m, the largest dimension being parallel to the coastline. A group of administrative buildings and an equipment park are located on the northeast corner of the median.

Given the need to transport passengers as well as different types of goods, the current configuration of the port is not adapted to ensure these services properly in the absence of hoisting equipment. It should also be noted that the current wharf is in an advanced state of deterioration and requires rehabilitation.

Within the framework of the supervision mission, the following works are planned

  • Construction of a detached breakwater to protect the harbour basin from sea agitation;
  • Rehabilitation and extension of the port's logistics platform (quay) including the reinforcement of the current protection of the quay (riprap stairway);
  • Rehabilitation of the existing wharf and construction of a sheet pile curtain next to the wharf.

Our mission

  • Monitoring of the works, technical assistance, control and approval of the execution studies
